Ragdoll

Project Date: January 11th 2003.

Model: Sylva Welch

Originally, I had intended to Paint a rag doll along the lines of "Sally" from the "nightmare before Christmas," but since I have always found that white paint (at least the kinds I use) tends to flake off faster than most other colors, I decided to go with a more colorful representation. To give credit where credit is due, the Idea was first given to me by Sylva, while we were first discussing the possibility of working together. At that time, I had been planning my "holey" project, so this one sat on the back burner for a month or two before we could get around to it. I made use of a friend’s professional camera experience for the lighting and set up of the photo shoot, although I took my own pictures as well as having him take them. The shots represented here are my own, since I was using a digital camera (Sony CD Mavica . . . I HIGHLY recommend them) and was able to put my shots to a web format before his were developed. At this time I have not seen his shots, but since he is a professional photographer and I am not, I assume they will be more attractive than these, and will post them alongside my own when they are ready.

As for the shoot itself, we took about seven hours to put the piece together (not counting the photo shoot) and as usual, the Sylva was a real champ. It’s gotten quite cold out here in Hollywood, and I happen to be painting my studio right now, so if I had turned on the heaters, there would have been a pretty healthy fire hazard. This plus the arctic blast from my airbrush created more than a few bouts of goose pimples, but Sylva managed to get through the day with stoic grace. As for my studio, there was little left of it when we were finished that was not covered in paint or painting supplies. My wife tells me that I am the consumate slob, and I think I proved that with gusto! It took me about four hours to clean up the wake of this painting maelstrom.
